Statement Regarding the Report from the Commission on the State of the U.S. Olympics and Paralympics
by Team USA Athletes' Commission
Today, the Commission on the State of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (the “Commission”) published its Final Report. The Commission was directed by Congress to conduct a study on the recent reforms undertaken by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (“USOPC”) to, among other things, improve the organization’s ability to fulfill its mission. You can read the Final Report
Team USA Athletes’ Commission (“Team USA AC”) is still in the process of reviewing the Report, but importantly, we wanted to share with you the monumental news that the Commission agreed with Team USA AC’s recommendation to make Team USA AC completely independent of the USOPC. This is a monumental step for all Team USA athletes, and a long-awaited change in the right direction to ensure a truly empowered athletes’ voice within the Movement.
We are incredibly grateful to the Commission for recognizing this critical need, and to you—the Team USA Athletes we serve—for your dedication to our cause. Implementing this recommendation will come with significant complexity, including ensuring adequate funding and access, and we will be working diligently in the weeks ahead to determine the path forward.
In addition, we applaud the Commission for putting forth other recommendations that will have a significant positive impact on the Movement and Team USA athletes. Based on our initial review of the Final Report, these changes include, but are not limited to, improvements to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, increasing direct athlete support, oversight, and consideration of new ways to support youth grassroots sports and high-performing athletes.
We look forward to entering this new era for our organization!
