COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee today announced the appointment of Mung Chiang to the USOPC Board of Directors.
Chiang currently serves as the president of Purdue University, as well as the Roscoe H. George Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
“As a distinguished academic leader, researcher and entrepreneur, Mung brings great and unique insights and perspective to the USOPC board,” said Gene Sykes, USOPC board chair. “The board best serves the athletes of Team USA, the staff of the USOPC and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement in the United States by offering expertise and collaboration. Adding Mung enhances our capabilities, and we are thrilled to welcome him.”
Chiang will join the board in 2025 to serve the last two years of Sykes’ recently vacated independent board seat (Sykes now serves on the board as a US member of the International Olympic Committee) and will be with eligible for election to two additional four-year terms.
“I am truly humbled by the opportunity to serve as an Independent Director on the USOPC Board of Directors, and I look forward to working with the incredible members of the Board chaired by Gene Sykes,” Chiang said. “With the momentous trajectory of USOPC and the upcoming LA28 Games, it is indeed a pivotal time to continue advancing the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, supporting the amazing athletes on Team USA, and collaborating across a broad spectrum of constituents and partners in the exciting world of Olympic and Paralympic sport.”
On January 1, 2023, Chiang became the 13th president of Purdue University. He previously served as the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering and executive vice president for strategic initiatives at Purdue, as well as the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University.
Chiang is a renowned expert in electrical engineering and computer science, specializing in network engineering and optimization. His groundbreaking work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Alan T. Waterman Award from the National Science Foundation. Beyond academia, Chiang has a track record of entrepreneurial success, founding multiple startups and contributing to industry advancements.
Chiang received his BS (1999), MS (2000) and PhD (2003) from Stanford University and an honorary doctorate (2024) from Dartmouth College.
The USOPC is expecting to fill one other open independent director seat in early 2025. Additionally, the U.S. Olympians & Paralympians Association and Team USA Athletes’ Commission are currently reviewing candidates for an at-large athlete-elected director role. That retired athlete will serve out a term ending in 2026 and be eligible for a four-year extension at that point.
The organization plans to announce the new members in the first quarter of 2025.
Per USOPC policy, each member is subject to a strict background check and screened for any conflicts of interest that could potentially interfere with acting in the best interest of Team USA athletes, the organization and its stakeholders.
The USOPC Board of Directors includes three representatives each from the Team USA Athletes’ Commission and National Governing Bodies Council (NGBC), two at-large athlete seats as well as five independent board members and American members of the IOC and members of the IPC Governing Board.
Sarah Hirshland, USOPC CEO, serves as a non-voting member of the board.
