Team USA Performance

Athlete Experience

We are committed to providing world-class training and resources to support athletes’ continued success in their sports. Team USA competed at key regional and international competitions in 2023, including the Pan American and Parapan American Games, where athletes came together in Santiago and inspired audiences with historic performances. During these events, 22 Olympic and eight Paralympic athletes qualified for their spots at the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Coming off a Games year in 2022, our winter athletes spent the year training and competing at key events around the world.

Pan American and Parapan American Games Santiago 2023#

  • The 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games marked the largest ever multi-sporting event in the Americas. The Games brought together nearly 2,000 Parapan American athletes, spanning 31 nations, and more than 6,800 Pan American athletes from 41 nations. 871 athletes represented Team USA, earning 452 medals.

These Games not only provided a platform for exceptional athletes to showcase their skills, determination and passion, they also fostered camaraderie and unity among the nations in our continental region. Several sports and disciplines on the Pan American and Parapan American Games program are not on the Olympic or Paralympic program, making Santiago the pinnacle event for many athletes to compete at the highest level on this multi-sport stage. For other athletes, the events provided pivotal qualification opportunities on the road to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, with seven Team USA teams and 16 athletes clinching their spots to compete.

After the Games, several athletes and organizations were recognized at the second Pan Am Sports Awards including the USOPC who was recognized for having the best National Olympic Committee Performance with 124 gold medals, 75 silver and 87 bronze.

  • “The Pan American and Parapan American Games were incredibly big competition platforms in 2023. For some athletes, the competition is the pinnacle of their career while others experience representing the United States for the first time at such a high level. Both competitions have proven to be crucial to the development of sport which is so special and something we should celebrate.”

    Sarah Hirshland, Chief Executive Officer

Weeks before the athletes touched down in Santiago, the USOPC and our community of partners were on the ground in Chile to set Team USA up for success. To make it all happen, we coordinated nearly 6,000 hotel rooms, prepared for 1,500 travel arrivals and departures and tirelessly advocated for the athletes. The support extended beyond Santiago as well. Fans across the country cheered on Team USA during both competitions, with over 400 organic social posts and nearly a million engagements across Team USA channels.

Performance Innovation #

  • We continue to focus on performance innovation – harnessing the power of data-informed decision-making, analytical rigor and technological advancement to proactively execute initiatives that optimize Team USA’s performance, competitive advantage and well-being. Since 2016, the Technology and Innovation Fund has committed $4.5 million to advance athletic performance and, in 2023, furthered its transformative impact on sports and athletes across the Movement.

By the end of the year, the Fund, fueled by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation, Technology and Innovation Advisory Committee and donors, supported 16 projects totaling $721,849. The USOPC invested in novel performance and wellness data, analytics and ground-breaking technology, including measuring the force of speed climbing holds, testing cycling and para-cycling aerodynamics, designing improved Nordic sit skis and using intelligent fabric to measure wheelchair track athlete output. Investments also helped NGB high performance staff, coaches and dietitians measure, monitor and manage customized athlete training and competition preparation.

Daniela Moroz of U.S. Sailing is a six-time world champion in the women’s formula kite event, which will debut on the Olympic program at the Paris 2024 Games. The Technology and Innovation Fund supported an equipment laser profiling and structural testing project that measures the performance of U.S. Sailing Team hydrofoils, which act like wings that produce lift and reduce drag in kiting. With insights from hydrofoil testing in-hand, Moroz and her coach could make data-informed equipment decisions in competition, giving her a competitive advantage. Moroz earned an Olympic quota spot for the U.S. at the 2023 World Championships and a gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games.

Additionally, we doubled the average active monthly users and continued to welcome new sports and athletes to our Athlete 360 platform. This comprehensive athlete performance and wellness data platform creates a holistic view of athlete data to drive communication, planning and informed decision-making for Team USA athletes and staff.

  • “Even though I had prior experience as an ACL rehab patient, there was still a lot of fear, and having a program to reinforce that I knew what I was doing enhanced my confidence in the process significantly. I truly felt like I hit the ground running due to the enhanced level of communication that [Athlete 360] provided.”

  • Furthering our commitment to collaborative innovation, we hosted the sixth annual U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Data, Analytics and Technology Summit. The Summit brought together 250 high-performance leaders, including entrepreneurs and experts from NGBs, the USOPC, professional sports organizations and universities to share recent work to support athletes, expanding its reach from 2022.
